This year, our team from Oklahoma partnered with Light Mission Africa to conduct a jiggers clinic at a local school in Kenya. For many of us, this was our first encounter with jiggers, and we did not know what to expect. What we learned was both eye-opening and deeply impactful.

Jiggers are tiny fleas that live in dusty environments. When people walk barefoot, the fleas burrow into the skin most commonly in the feet where they lay up to 20 eggs each. As the eggs develop, they cause intense pain and discomfort and can lead to serious complications, including infections, long-term health challenges, and in severe cases, death.

Treatment for jiggers is relatively straightforward but requires proper care. The affected area is first thoroughly cleaned, then soaked in medication that helps draw out the fleas, and finally treated with petroleum jelly to protect the skin and support healing.

However, eliminating jiggers from a household is more costly. It requires spraying the home with insecticide to prevent reinfestation, which averages about $100 per household. Fully treating an individual including medical care and household spraying costs approximately $150.
